Chief Executive Officer
Kyle Raffaniello is a proven leader in the health care industry with over 25 years of experience in accelerating corporate growth. She has a passion for excellence in bringing innovative solutions to market that add value to clients’ operations.
Previously, Kyle was Chief Strategy Officer and Executive Vice President of ValueOptions, a behavioral health company, where she was responsible for profits across all lines of business. She was Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing for Consortium Health Plans, an organization focused on account growth and retention for the nation’s 20 largest Blue Cross Blue Shield plans. Kyle has also held senior sales and marketing positions at a number of regional health plans, as well as led provider relations for several large medical delivery systems.
Kyle earned a Master of Science in Health Care Administration from George Washington University. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Business and Theology from Mount St. Mary’s College.
Chief Financial & Administrative Officer
Bryan has deep experience leading technology companies through fast-paced and high growth environments. As Chief Financial & Administrative Officer, Bryan is responsible for leading and guiding the organizations’ financial growth and ensuring the integrity of the data across the organization; overseeing finance, data engineering, analytics, quality, IT and facilities.
Before Sapphire Digital, Bryan was the CFO and Head of Strategy at Benchmark Solutions where he oversaw all strategic, financial and legal activities for the company. He also worked at Tradeweb Markets in a variety of escalating accounting, finance and business development roles, most recently as Director of U.S. Strategy and Business Development.
Bryan graduated from Lehigh University with a BS in Accounting.
Chief People Officer
Jeanne has over 30 years of experience as a business executive and human resource leader. As Chief People Officer at Sapphire Digital, Jeanne provides the strategies and leadership necessary to develop and grow a highly-engaged, high-performing, results-driven workforce.
Prior to joining Sapphire Digital, Jeanne was the Executive Vice President of Human Resources at Priceline.com and Oxford Health Plans, two high growth businesses. There she oversaw the acquisition and development of critical talent and leadership, created total-reward policies, and built the people strategies and programs necessary to move the business from early stage to business maturity.
Jeanne received her Masters of Public Administration from New York University and her BS in Nursing from Georgetown University.
Chief Client Officer
Melanie brings 20 years of experience in health care services to her role as Senior Vice President and Chief Client Officer. Melanie is responsible for leading all of Sapphire Digital’s client-facing organizations, including implementation, services and engagement and delivering the end-to-end client client experience.
Prior to Sapphire Digital, Melanie was VP of Client Services at RelayHealth, division of McKesson. Melanie developed a growth-oriented services strategy, focusing on providing customers with the highest quality services and increasing operational efficiencies. She managed EMR vendor partner relations that drove scalable interoperability services to joint clients.
Melanie received her Master of Public Administration from Long Island University, and earned a BS in Food and Nutrition from Herbert H. Lehman College.
Chief Data & Analytics Officer
Larry brings more than 20 years of technology leadership to his role as Chief Technology and Data Officer. Larry focuses on expanding Sapphire Digital’s technology platform to meet the growing needs of the health care marketplace with improved data, client and member engagement, and cost transparency capabilities. Larry also manages the Strategic Program Management Office for the cross-functional management of our strategic initiative portfolio. In addition, he is a member of Sapphire Digital’s Technology Operations Team that is chartered with developing and executing the strategies and plans required to advance engineering, technology and operations initiatives to support the business.
Before joining Sapphire Digital, Larry was Director of Technology for Frog Design, Inc. Earlier, he was Co-Founder and Vice President of Technology at ioLogics. He has also held senior executive roles at Vignette and Platinum Technology.
Larry received his B.S. in Computer and Information Science from Bloomsburg University.
Chief Product & Technology Officer
Paul is a seasoned business leader who brings a unique blend of operational management, product strategy, human-centered design and strategic marketing experience to his role at Sapphire Digital. As Chief Product & Technology Officer, Paul leads the product, design and engineering teams as well as the company’s marketing and engagement functions.
Prior to Sapphire Digital, Paul was Vice President of Digital Strategy at Highmark Health, responsible for developing and deploying the company’s overall strategic digital customer experience. An entrepreneur at heart, Paul also co-founded and was Chief Creative Officer of Thinktiv, focused on maturing and extend product development lifecycles, and co-founded and ran Inquiri, a spinoff of Thinktiv.
Paul received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Communication Design from Carnegie Mellon University.
Executive Vice President & General Counsel
Eric brings over 10 years of health care legal experience to his role as Executive Vice President & General Counsel. He manages Sapphire Digital’s legal affairs, including all contracts, intellectual property and privacy issues. Eric serves as the Chief Compliance Officer, overseeing the company’s compliance with applicable laws and regulations, including HIPAA. In addition, he manages policies and procedures with respect to protected health information (PHI) and manages the maintenance of HITRUST CSF certification.
Prior to Sapphire Digital, Eric served as in-house counsel at St. Joseph’s Health System and is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation of St. Joseph’s Health. Eric was also an attorney in the Health Law Department of Brach Eichler, LLC.
Eric received his J.D. from Seton Hall University School of Law, and his BS in Finance and International Business from Penn State University. Eric is licensed to practice law in New Jersey and New York.
Senior Vice President, Sales
Dennis brings nearly 20 years of experience in the fields of health care technology and group insurance sales, benefits consultation and employer benefits management to his role of Senior Vice President, Sales. In this position, Dennis has responsibility for revenue generation and retention for all Sapphire Digital health plan and employer solutions. During his career, Dennis has consulted with, directed, and sold to many of the nation’s largest insurers, employers and consultants.
Prior to joining Sapphire Digital, Dennis was Vice President, National and Consultant Sales at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. Additionally, Dennis was deeply involved with Consortium Health Plans, serving as a member of their Sales Leadership Committee and Blue Consultant Team.
Dennis received his B.S. in Business Administration, Health Care Management from the University of Connecticut. He is a director on the board for the New England Employee Benefits Council (NEEBC).
Senior Vice President, Business Development
Rob combines entrepreneurial and start-up experience with over 20 years in the health insurance and technology industries. As Senior Vice President, Strategy & Business Development, Rob leads strategy development and execution, including identifying strategic partners and programs that advance Sapphire Digital’s solutions for health plan and employer customers.
Rob has a passion for supporting consumers in finding high-value healthcare. He previously served as Chief Executive Officer of Compass Healthcare Advisers, a pioneer in rewards-based healthcare transparency, which was acquired by Sapphire Digital in 2014. Earlier in his career, he held several leadership roles within Blue Cross Blue Shield plans in sales and strategic planning. He also held various business and technical consulting positions within the healthcare and financial services.
Rob holds a BS in Business Management from Bryant University and an MBA from Babson College.
Chairman & Founder
Mitch founded Sapphire Digital, previously known as Vitals, in 2008 after personally experiencing the complexity of finding a qualified physician for his knee surgery. The company was the first website to pair quality doctor information with reviews from patients. Later, the company successfully expanded into technology products and services that it sold nationwide to health plans and employers. For its first seven years, Mitch served as CEO, growing the company at a 65 percent compounded annual revenue growth rate.
In 2018, Sapphire Digital’s consumer website – Vitals.com – was acquired by WebMD. Mitch continues to serve as Chairman to Sapphire, the digital engagement platform that provides breakthrough technology products and services that bring clarity to health care costs and quality.
Prior to Sapphire Digital, Mitch started more than a half-dozen businesses, including Raspberry Red Marketing, NetWorks, Tuff Rhino, Awards.com, RUSS CandyBears and Time Warner Viewer’s Edge. He has also been involved in the rapid growth of Popcorn Indiana, Blue Moon Mexican Cafe and IT’SUGAR.
Mitch has an MBA, with honors, from Columbia University and an MA (Phi Beta Kappa, Summa Cum Laude) from Queens College in New York.
Vice President, Merchant Banking Division, Goldman, Sachs
Jeff is a Vice President in the Merchant Banking Division (MBD) of Goldman Sachs, based in New York, and a leader of the division’s private equity activities in the healthcare sector. Prior to joining MBD, he worked in healthcare investment banking at Goldman Sachs from 2008 to 2010.
Jeff serves as a Board Member or Observer of Advanced Recovery Systems, a provider of addiction treatment services; Upstream Physical Therapy, a provider of outpatient physical therapy services; Golden State Medical Supply, a generic pharmaceutical repackager serving the VA and DoD channels; Brighton Health Plan Solutions, a healthcare third-party administration business in the New York metropolitan area; Privia Health, a leading physician management company; T2Biosystems, an emerging leader in the field of in vitro diagnostics; and Vitals, a provider of healthcare price transparency and consumer engagement solutions. Jeff was also actively involved in the firm’s former healthcare investments in HCA, the largest for-profit owner/operator of healthcare facilities in the US, and XLHealth, a sponsor of Medicare Advantage health plans (sold to UnitedHealthcare).
Jeff earned an AB in Economics, magna cum laude, and a Certificate in Finance from Princeton University in 2008.
Managing Director, Brothers Brook, LLC
Jeffery H. Boyd is the Founder and Managing Director of Brothers Brook, LLC, a strategic investment firm focusing on consumer internet and healthcare services businesses. He is Chairman of the Board of Directors of The Priceline Group, Inc. based in Norwalk, Connecticut where he served as Chief Executive Officer from November 2002 to December 2013, and from April to December 2016. Jeff serves on the Board of Directors of Healthcare, Inc., which owns Healthcare.com. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Home Depot, Inc. Prior to joining Priceline, Jeff held positions as Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Oxford Health Plans, Inc. and Assistant General Counsel of Lord Abbett & Co., an investment advisory firm. He also practiced law with the Connecticut law firm of Robinson & Cole and with Sullivan & Cromwell in New York and Melbourne, Australia. Jeff received his BA in Government from St. Lawrence University in 1978 and his JD from Cornell Law School in 1981.
Partner, Cardinal Partners
Tom McKinley, who has more than 35 years of investment experience, is a General Partner and the West Coast representative for Cardinal Partners, a venture capital firm focused exclusively on healthcare investing. Prior to joining Cardinal Partners, Tom was the Co-Founder and Co-Managing Partner of Partech International. Tom currently serves on the Board of Directors of lifeIMAGE, a cloud-based medical imaging sharing platform for hospitals, physicians and patients, and in Teladoc (TDOC), a telehealth services provider of doctor consults to consumers. He also serves on the Board of Directors of Awarepoint, RTLS delivers contextual awareness and operational intelligence to the Internet of Things to increase efficiency, improve quality management. In addition, Tom is the founding Chief Executive Officer and Board of Director of Cardinal Analytx, a software start-up spun out of Stanford University that was created to identify and target high-cost patients for early medical interventions using machine learning.
Tom earned Bachelor of Arts in economics from Harvard University, a Master of Science in accounting from New York University and a Master of Business Administration from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business.
Managing Partner, Activate Venture Partners
Todd Pietri is a Managing Partner of Activate Venture Partners. He is also the Managing Partner of Activate’s predecessor funds – Milestone Venture Partners – which he co-founded in 1999. Mr. Pietri has developed significant expertise and relationships in the Digital Health sector targeted by the Fund. He has originated and/or guided over ten portfolio companies to successful exits, including numerous software and data businesses. His earlier financial experience includes co-heading the Technology and Communications Investment Banking Group at Legacy Securities, where he performed a broad range of capital raising, M&A and other financial advisory services. Mr. Pietri was also a member of Legacy’s direct investment team, which provided mezzanine and growth equity through its affiliate, Legacy Capital Partners. Mr. Pietri also has control investment experience, having worked as an Associate at Callier Interest, a private equity firm focused on middle-market industrial distributors and manufacturers.
Prior to his investment experience, Mr. Pietri ran IT consulting and direct sales for CompuSystems, an Atlanta-based ERP software and services firm focused on industrial distributors and manufacturers. Prior to CompuSystems, Mr. Pietri worked in the voice processing software industry for Innovative Technology and Call Response Automation.
Mr. Pietri holds a B.A., cum laude, in English from Duke University and, while working full-time for CompuSystems, he earned his M.B.A. from the two-year Executive MBA Program at the Robinson School of Business at Georgia State University, graduating first in his class. He is also a CFA charter holder. Mr. Pietri is an Advisory Board Member of the Healthcare Advisory Board for the Partnership for NYC.
Managing Director, Piper Jaffray Merchant Banking
Tom Schnettler is Vice Chairman of Piper Jaffray Companies, and Managing Director in the merchant banking group. In his merchant banking role, Schnettler serves as Co-CEO of PJC Capital Partners LLC, the registered investment adviser to the Piper Jaffray merchant banking private funds. He initiated the merchant banking business at Piper Jaffray in 2008 and has overseen the division since that time. Schnettler also served as President and Chief Operating Officer of Piper Jaffray from 2008 to 2011, and as Chief Financial Officer between 2006 and 2008. Prior to that, Schnettler served as Head of the Piper Jaffray corporate and institutional services business beginning in 2002, and as Head/Co-Head of investment banking beginning in 2000. From 1989 to 2000, he co-founded and led the healthcare investment banking group. Schnettler joined the Piper Jaffray investment banking group in 1986.
Schnettler has served on the board of or held board observation responsibility for the following portfolio companies: Torax Medical, Sapphire, OrthoAccel and Sport Ngin. Over the course of his career, he has served many not-for-profit organizations including Saint John’s University, The Lillehei Heart Institute at the University of Minnesota, Catholic Charities of St. Paul and Minneapolis and the American Heart Association.
Schnettler graduated from Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota and holds a Juris Doctorate from Harvard Law School.
Chairman, Brighton Health Partners
Bill leads Brighton Health Partners. He has over 25 years of experience as both an operator and investor in the healthcare services and HCIT sectors. Bill is a Board Member and investor in Sapphire, a provider of healthcare price transparency and consumer engagement solutions; Access Clinical Partners, which develops and operates urgent care centers and Maxwell Health, a human resource platform that manages benefits and promotes employee health. Bill also sits on the Board of HUB International, a leading North American insurance brokerage that provides a variety of property and casualty, life and health, employee benefits, investment and risk management solutions. Prior to BHG, Bill was a Partner in the healthcare group at Apax Partners from 2007-2012. While at Apax, Bill led the $1.4B acquisition of TriZetto Group, the leading provider of technology solutions to payors. Bill sat on the Boards of Marken Ltd. (pharma services), Spectrum Laboratories (clinical lab), Qualitest (generic pharmaceutical mfg.) and Magnacare Holdings. Bill was a member of the founding management team of Oxford Health Plans (1987 to 2000), his last four as President of the company. While Bill worked at Oxford, the company grew to over $5B in revenue. Bill received a BS in Finance and Banking from Suffolk University in Boston.
Dr. Todd K. Rosengart is a board certified cardiothoracic surgeon and brings the doctors’ perspective to his role as co-founder of Sapphire Digital. Besides acting as the voice of the medical community, Dr. Rosengart provides the business with pivotal thought-leadership on opportunities and regulations within the healthcare infrastructure.
In addition to his role at Sapphire Digital, Dr. Rosengart serves as Chair of the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine. Previously, he was professor and Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at SUNY-Stony Brook, as well as Co-Director of The Stony Brook University Medical Center Heart Center.
Richard D. Forman is the managing partner of Health Venture Group, LLC, a private investment company focused on technology and consumer related health care. He is also an investor in other health care companies including Centrihealth, Healthination, Startup Health, Blueprint Health, Maxwell Health and Doctor.com. He currently serves as a board member for Maimonides Medical Center, the leading treatment facility and academic medical center in Brooklyn, NY.
Previously, Richard was Co-Founder, President and CEO of Register.com where he grew revenue to over $115 million and took the Company public. He was instrumental in deregulating the domain name market and assisted the industry and the Department of Commerce in delegating its internet responsibilities to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). Earlier in his career, Richard was a consultant with Booz, Allen & Company where he consulted on systems, operations and strategy assignments. Mr. Forman is a graduate of the M&T program from the University of Pennsylvania where he received a BS in Electrical Engineering and a BS from the Wharton School.
